Five common concentration errors in sport



1. Distracted Mindset: A distracted mindset occurs when an athlete's focus is split between multiple thoughts or activities, leading to difficulty concentrating on the task at hand. This can often occur during competitions when an athlete is thinking about external factors such as the crowd, the weather, or their opponent.


2. Overthinking: Overthinking occurs when an athlete is too focused on the technical aspects of their sport or their performance. This can lead to paralysis by analysis, where an athlete becomes so consumed with their thoughts that they are unable to perform at their best.


3. Lack of Focus: A lack of focus can occur when an athlete loses sight of their goals or becomes easily distracted by their surroundings. This can be caused by external factors such as noise or visual distractions or internal factors such as fatigue or boredom.


4. Negative Self-Talk: Negative self-talk occurs when an athlete talks themselves out of success. This can be caused by a lack of confidence, fear of failure, or past failures. Negative self-talk can lead to a decrease in motivation and performance.


5. Anxiety: Anxiety is a common concentration error that can occur when an athlete is under pressure or in a high-stress situation. Anxiety can cause an athlete to become distracted, overthink, or lose focus. It can also lead to physical symptoms such as sweating, shaking, or a rapid heartbeat, which can further impact an athlete's performance.
